Gimnasta soviética. Debutó en los campeonatos internacionales de 1969, a los 13 años. Menuda, atractiva, con una sonrisa cautivante, fue la primera persona en realizar un salto mortal invertido en la viga. En los Juegos Olímpicos de 1972 logró tres medallas de oro (en la viga, los ejercicios de suelo y como miembro del equipo olímpico de la Unión Soviética) y una de plata (en las barras paralelas asimétricas). En los Juegos de 1976 ganó una medalla de oro con el equipo de su país y una de plata en la viga.
